ANYTHING BUT GRIZZLY
Creating new ideas in a roundabout kind of way
The Bear Pit - formerly known as St. James Barton Roundabout - is now a site of an extraordinary experiment.
In 2012 enlightened Council officials, declared the space a 'Community Action Zone' adding that they had no clear idea what that meant. Well, we can all start with a grandiose project name anyway right?
Still, from these interesting beginnings has emerged the Bearpit Improvement Group consisting of a broad-based group of locals who have taken on the space, and presided over a refurbishment in conjunction with Bristol City Council.
The space is truly experimental, a cultural “commons”, where we can experiment different, incremental and gentle approaches to public space.
BRINGING WHEELS TO THE ROUNDABOUT
No need to play dead with this bear
The Bearpit Improvement Group allocated some funds towards a simple skate obstacle that would encourage wheeled riders to use the space and help bring more a diverse energy to the round-about.
BSC worked with Canvas skatepark designers on the project which has been a huge success with the local users.
Simply put, it's made a roundabout a helluva lot more interactive and fun. A rare occurrence when you think about it; just ask the people of Milton Keynes.
